Pneumococcal disease refers to a group of potentially serious conditions caused by infection from the bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as pneumococcus. While anyone can get pneumococcal disease, people in certain age groups or those living with certain medical conditions are at increased risk. Manifestations of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) include bacteremic pneumonia, meningitis and bacteremia. Non-invasive pneumococcal disease includes otitis media (ear infection), sinusitis, and pneumonia without bacteremia1
